In my opinion specifically for marketing area, the email marketing campaigns can be also combined with any promotional activities. For example, to those who received the email message and quote back the listed promotional code can get a certain period of free trial service or limited time offer discount.

This way would be a good tool to measure at to what level of effectiveness the email marketing campaigns through customer feedback.
